Katy Perry has gotten some flack for her songs from the gay community. Katy sat down with She Magazine to talk about some of those things. Check out a snip of her interview.
Considering that “I Kissed a Girl” was actually written by four people, how did you all agree on the lyrics and how much did the final version change from the way it was originally thought?
The chorus of “I Kissed a Girl” came to me when I woke up one day. I thought it was bullsh*t that it could actually happen to someone, as I had read in interviews that it has happened to other artists before. I thought it was very peculiar for it to just pop in my head. I didn’t do anything with it for a year and a half but it was constantly there in the back of my mind, in a specific spot where I keep ideas for songs. Towards the end of the record I was writing with Dr. Luke and Max Martin, they were more focused on the track and the melodies. I decided just to go with my gut and finish this song. Cathy Dennis was flying in from London to NYC to write with Luke on other projects and I invited her to write with me on this song. Cathy and I focused heavily on the lyrics as the boys made sure the song had groove. Lyrics are most important to me and I always say exactly what I think no matter who I’m writing with.
Did you think there might be controversy or negative reactions towards some of the lyrics of “I Kissed a Girl” and “Ur So Gay” when you were writing them? How did you feel about that?
I knew that my lyrics are not your everyday “My Humps” or “Love Song” but there was something different about it. I knew that “I Kissed a Girl” would maybe raise some eyebrows or turn some heads, but was never worth headline news even though they gave it to me. I think my perspective is very frank with a dash of sarcasm and a pinch slapstick and whole hell of a lot of humor. There’s no agenda, there’s no conspiracy in these songs. I just have less of a filter than some from my brain to my mouth. I’m just the kind of girl that comes out and says it when everybody else is thinking it.
