Former baseball slugger Jose Canseco was detained for over nine hours at a San Diego Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility yesterday after border agents caught him trying to bring human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) across the border from Mexico.
The fertility drug, which is extracted from the urine of a pregnant woman, helps produce testosterone in athletes who are cycling off steroids. HCG is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency in males only and is considered a Schedule-III controlled substance in New York.
Jose Canseco, was with his girlfriend Heidi Northcutt when he was stopped and detained, had to sign a waiver and a consent form allowing his Los Angeles-area home to be searched by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in order for his release from custody, according to his attorney Gregory Emerson. Early Friday morning, before Jose Canseco returned to his home, at least 10 ICE agents pored through Jose Canseco’s belongings while Gregory Emerson was present.
“They were very polite, very pleasant,” Gregory Emerson said. “There was no ransacking of the place.” He also stated that Jose Canseco has not yet been charged, but will appear before a federal magistrate Tuesday morning in Los Angeles at 9 a.m..
