Like his song ‘Payback’ it seems that even after his death, the heirs to James Brown continue to look for Payback. James Brown passed away on December 25, 2006 but it took nearly three months and between $70-150,00 to keep him on “ice’ before his body was laid to rest in March. His funeral was put on hold because of disputes over his estate, all arising from his flamboyant life; he had multiple wives, consorts, children and grandchildren, some with unproven paternity fighting over his estate.
And, so it’s no surprise that just as the Christies Galleries in Rockefeller Center New York City, opened its doors yesterday allowing the press to see the 350 items waiting to be auctioned on Thursday, July 17, from skin tight jumpsuits with SEX written across the scoop front to the hair rollers he used to keep his doo doo’n, the controversial estate affairs keep getting messier.

Late Wednesday, South Carolina a state appeals court judge Jasper M. Cureton approved a surprise request by the two former business managers, Albert H. Dallas and Alfred A. Bradley, for an emergency stay of the sale. The two former business managers are at war with the estate’s court-appointed trustees. The trustees have until Monday to explain their position.
In a statement made yesterday by Christie’s, the auction house said it was confident that the sale would be held on schedule.
